Dr. Stefan Mair

Executive Chairman of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP)

Dr. Stefan Mair has been the Executive Chairman of the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) and Director of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs since October 2020. From 2010 to 2020, he was a member of the Executive Board of the Federation of German Industries (BDI). Prior to this, he served as Research Director of the SWP from 2007 to 2009 and held various roles at SWP from 1992 to 2010, including head of the Middle East and Africa Research Division and member of the executive board. Dr. Mair earned his doctorate from Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich in 1992, after completing a PhD scholarship at the ifo Institute for Economic Research.
